Three races over two nights were on tap for the International Sim Drivers Club to start out the league's third season. The non-traditional Sunday night affair featured the Gatorade Duels from Daytona, which set the starting grid for the Grand National Series premier event, the Daytona 300.
In Duel 1 Cody Wenzen took an early lead before an electrical fault dropped him to the tail of the field. He rebounded to fourth. Stephen Laarkamp then lead much of the event but right at the end Dylan Lee and Trevor Brownlee made a pass around the outside, propelling them to first and second. By virtue of his single car speed, Cody Wenzen will still start first in the 300, but Dylan Lee will start right behind him.
In Duel 2 Tim Silliman lead early before two yellows slowed the field. The crew took too long at one point on pit road and it cost him as he was unable to get back to the draft. Johne Martin was able to play it calm and cool and took the lead mid race and never relinquished it, holding off a last lap charge from Will Roberts and Caeton Bomersbach. By virtue of his single car speed, Silliman will also maintain his front row starting spot for the Daytona 300, with Johne Martin starting right behind him in fourth.
Monday night saw the Formula World Series back in action for the first invitation only event, The Challenge, also known as the Chevron for the unique branding of the event, took place on a hot slick Phoenix International Raceway. With the sun belting down, the drivers strapped in for an all out sprint race. The race, which was only 40 laps, was dominated by Danny Roberts, who took home victory by almost ten seconds. Caeton Bomersbach got his second second place finish in two nights, while Tim Silliman rounded out the podium.
